Bereavement Chaplain

The Reverend Keith Osmund-Smith is a Baptist Minister living in Telford where he ministers to a thriving congregation in Madeley. He is also West Mercia Police Chaplain and Ecumenical Chaplain in Telford & Wrekin Borough.Keith served with the West Midlands Police from 1969 - 1995 mainly on the western side of the force area and also in Training, locally in Wolverhampton, regionally at Ryton On Dunsmore and nationally in Harrogate. He is a member of the Wolverhampton Branch of NARPO. In recent times Keith has attended a number of funerals of former friends and colleagues. He understands that it may be that the majority of police officers, retired or otherwise would not consider themselves particularly religious and that many are not church-goers. Nevertheless either through their traditions or their upbringing they have a spiritual awareness which is simply not founded in secular non-religious belief. When death comes it is left to the widowed spouse and family to make arrangements for their funeral and many undertakers, on hearing that a deceased was not a church goer or a person of overt faith offer only a secular/humanist ceremony of remembrance – no prayers and no hymns. While this may be satisfactory for some it is acknowledged that prayers and well-loved and familiar hymns are very much part of the process of saying farewell to a loved one and contribute to bringing real comfort to the bereaved and the mourning.Keith offers his help and experience to counsel and to guide anyone who finds themselves in such situations and also conduct the funeral should they so wish. He believes that this is very much a part of his his duty as a Chaplain and will not charge a fee. Like any other Chaplain he considers it his role only to bring a listening ear, care, comfort and provide a fitting service to former friends and colleagues and their families at a time of loss.

It is really wonderful to announce that our member, friend and colleague, Keith Osmund-Smith has been awarded the BEM in the New Years Honours List.
Keith being Keith his comment to our Secretary, Paul Snape was “I couldn’t do any of the stuff I’ve done without the support of family and the company of so many volunteers.”
Congratulations and well done Keith from the Branch
